Bangladesh makes rapid progress towards gender equality

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CU)_ Fazilatunnessa Indira, the State Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs, announced that the government has taken necessary measures to reduce gender disparity and that they have increased the budget allocation for women’s growth and empowerment. She also indicated that the government had shown good progress towards gender equality in the recent times.

The State Minister said that Bangladesh ranked fifth in the world to ensure gender equality. She said, “Bangladesh has become the 5th among the world’s 153 successful states in ensuring gender equal society as the incumbent government has been gradually increasing budget allocations for the women folks”.

According to a press release, the State Minister delivered this message while addressing the Women in Development (WID) Officials Program under Strengthening Gender Responsive Budgeting project of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium. The state minister highlighted that the government has raised the budget allocation almost 5 times over the last 10 years.

The government has made remarkable advancement in empowering women in politics, gender equality at the primary and secondary levels, reducing child and maternal deaths, and healthcare and vaccination throughout the country via proper implementation of the gender budget.

The state minister spoke about the woman employment and entrepreneurship. She said, “Women development and empowerment are visible through socio-economic development. So, it is necessary to create employment for women and build them as entrepreneurs. Thus, the government’s patronization and budget allocation is essential.” She added that under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s direction, the government has been introducing gender-sensitive budgets.
