Australian police have ended an unusual investigation after discovering that what appeared to be human remains inside a suitcase was actually a highly realistic doll.
The suitcase was found beside a road near Oallen, a small village about 230km southwest of Sydney. Two men came across it while they were travelling through the area. The discovery initially led police to suspect that a person had been killed. On Monday, officers announced that they were treating the case as a possible murder.
The news quickly attracted public attention. However, the situation changed only a few hours later. Forensic testing showed that the contents of the suitcase were not human remains. Police confirmed that the object was a lifelike doll.
Hume Police District Superintendent Linda Bradbury said the doll looked extremely realistic. She explained that it had initially been difficult to tell that it was not a real person. The doll was dressed in clothes and had hair. It also had a nose piercing. Police said it had marks that looked similar to bruises and scratches.
Investigators and forensic officers went to the location on Sunday. They followed normal procedures while examining the suitcase and surrounding area. Bradbury said police had taken care not to disturb the scene. This precaution was done to protect possible evidence and ensure the investigation was handled correctly.
She also said she did not regret the way officers responded to the discovery. The two men who found the suitcase were reportedly shocked by what they saw. They had been on a weekend drive and stopped for a short break when they noticed the suitcase.
Police praised the pair for reporting their discovery instead of ignoring it. Bradbury said officers would contact them to explain that the suspected remains were not human. After forensic tests confirmed the truth, police closed the investigation. No murder had taken place, and there was no victim connected to the suitcase.
