Booker Prize 2024 judges unveiled as literary award submissions commence!

-

The distinguished panel of judges for the 2024 Booker Prize has been revealed, coinciding with the opening of submissions for the esteemed literary accolade. Renowned porcelain potter and author Edmund de Waal will lead the panel, accompanied by award-winning novelist Sara Collins, the Guardian’s deputy literature editor Justine Jordan, world-renowned writer and professor Yiyun Li, and the accomplished musician, composer, and producer Nitin Sawhney.

The judging team, diverse in their backgrounds spanning art, literature, science, law, and music, is tasked with selecting outstanding works of long-form English-language fiction published in the UK and/or Ireland between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024. Submissions are currently open for UK and Irish publishers, with deadlines staggered between January 29 and June 3, 2024.

The Booker Prize process will unfold with the announcement of the ‘Booker Dozen,’ comprising 12 or 13 long-listed books, in July 2024. Following rigorous deliberations, a final shortlist of six titles will be unveiled in September 2024, culminating in the grand reveal of the Booker Prize 2024 winner in November. The prestigious award not only bestows a £50,000 cash prize upon the victor but also grants £2,500 to each of the six shortlisted authors.

Reflecting on the significance of their role, Edmund de Waal expressed eagerness to explore contemporary fiction without preconceptions, emphasizing the joy of being part of the “best book club ever.” Gaby Wood, Chief Executive of the Booker Prize Foundation, highlighted the perceptive and diverse backgrounds of the judges, anticipating their insightful discussions and the literary discoveries that will captivate readers in the coming year.

The Booker Prize, known for transforming careers and catapulting authors to global acclaim, has seen previous winners like Irish writer Paul Lynch and Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka. As the literary world eagerly awaits the next laureate, the 2024 Booker Prize promises to continue its legacy of recognizing and celebrating outstanding contributions to English-language fiction.
