British Airways is reportedly paying…

-

Aviation and Airlines (Commonwealth Union) _ A British Airways passenger traveling through London Heathrow Airport recently claimed that he was offered a voucher not to use the airline’s Galleries First lounge in Terminal 5. The lounge, which is exclusive to certain passengers, including British Airways Gold Card holders, was reportedly at capacity due to a significant number of flight delays and cancellations by the airline.

The traveler reported that when he arrived at the check-in desk for the lounge, the agent discreetly offered him £30 ($37.5) to forgo his use of the lounge on that visit. While there was no suggestion that he would not be allowed in if he declined, he was still permitted to enter the lounge. It’s worth noting that the passenger was heading to the more exclusive Concorde Room, which is accessible to a select group of passengers.

In such situations, airlines are within their rights to turn passengers away from lounges if they have reached capacity. This decision can be influenced by customer service and safety concerns, as well as building regulations that dictate the maximum occupancy of a room in case of an emergency. While pay-to-use lounge customers are often subject to capacity limits, it is less common in dedicated airline lounges, as airlines usually plan carefully to avoid overcrowding.

The compensation offered to passengers in this situation could be seen as an incentive for them to wait elsewhere or proceed directly to their gates, reducing the number of passengers in the lounge. Terminal 5 at London Heathrow also has an alternative pay-to-use lounge called the Aspire Lounge, which charges £45 ($56.2) for entry or £28 ($35) for a two-hour visit before the flight, with additional charges for services like showers.
