Can Eating the Same Meals Every Day Help You Lose Weight Faster?

A study from the American Psychological Association found that people may lose more weight when they eat the same meals often. It also showed that having a consistent number of daily calories can help. A simple eating pattern makes it easier to follow a healthy plan. People do not have to think too much about what to eat each day. This can help them stay focused and avoid unhealthy choices. The research was shared in the journal Health Psychology. It followed participants during a 12-week weight loss program and observed their eating habits closely.

The results showed that adults who ate the same meals often lost more weight. They also kept their calories similar each day. People who ate many different foods lost less weight. The main researcher, Charlotte Hagerman, explained this. She said eating healthy today is not easy. There are many food choices everywhere. This makes it hard to control what we eat. She said routines can help. Eating the same meals reduces pressure. It makes healthy eating feel easier and more natural.

To carry out the study, researchers followed 112 adults who were overweight or obese. All participants were part of a structured weight loss program. They were asked to record everything they ate using a mobile app and to weigh themselves daily using a wireless scale. The researchers focused on the first 12 weeks because this is when people are usually most careful and consistent with tracking their habits. The researchers studied eating patterns in two main ways. First, they looked at how stable each person’s calorie intake was. This means they checked how many daily calories changed from one day to another and between weekdays and weekends. Second, they looked at how often people repeated the same meals instead of choosing different foods every day.

The results were clear. People who ate many of the same meals over time lost more weight. On average, they lost about 5.9% of their body weight. In comparison, those who ate a more varied diet lost about 4.3%. The study also showed that people who kept their daily calorie intake more consistent had better results. Even small changes in daily calories made a difference. When calorie intake changed by 100 calories each day, weight loss dropped by about 0.6% over 12 weeks. This shows that keeping calories similar each day can help with better weight loss results.

The findings suggest that eating simpler meals can be helpful. Having a few regular meals makes it easier to stay on track. You don’t have to think too much about what to eat each day. This can lower stress and save time. It can also help you avoid unhealthy foods. But this study only shows a connection. It does not prove that one thing causes the other. Other things may also play a role. These include motivation, discipline, and commitment. Past studies say variety in food is good for health. But they mainly focus on healthy foods. These include fruits and vegetables.

In contrast, today’s food environment includes many unhealthy options, which can make too much variety a problem. Hagerman explained that in an ideal world, people would be encouraged to eat a wide range of healthy foods. But in reality, having too many choices can lead to poor decisions. A more repetitive diet may help people stay consistent and make better choices, even if it means less variety. Another surprising result was related to weekend eating. People who recorded higher calorie intake on weekends still lost more weight. Researchers believe this is not because they ate more, but because they were more consistent in tracking their food, even on weekends when many people stop paying attention.
