US President Donald Trump has urged voters to support Republican candidates in North Carolina as his party faces mounting pressure ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. During a rally in Greenville on Tuesday, he expressed confidence that Republicans could overcome poor polling results and surprise their critics.
Trump has travelled more than 29,000 miles since late September to campaign for Republican candidates. His latest visit to North Carolina highlights the importance of the state, where a closely watched Senate contest could influence the balance of power in Washington.
Republican Michael Whatley is competing against former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper for a Senate seat being vacated by Thom Tillis. Recent polls indicate that Cooper holds a substantial lead. Several Republican groups have also reduced their financial support for Whatley’s campaign.
Despite these challenges, Trump encouraged supporters to remain confident. He argued that polls often underestimate Republican support and predicted strong election results.
Democrats Gain Ground as Election Approaches
North Carolina has supported Trump in all three of his presidential campaigns. However, Democrats believe they have an opportunity to make significant gains this November.
Economic concerns and public dissatisfaction with the administration have become major issues in the election campaign. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll placed Trump’s approval rating at 31%, marking the lowest level recorded during his two presidential terms.
Early voting figures also suggest a challenge for Republicans. According to state data, Democratic voters have cast approximately twice as many early ballots as Republicans in North Carolina.
At Tuesday’s rally, Republican congressional candidates urged supporters to vote before election day. Laurie Buckhout, who is running against Democratic Representative Don Davis, said Republicans needed strong voter participation to protect their position.
The congressional contests have attracted substantial campaign spending. Outside groups have spent about $21 million on the Buckhout-Davis race since September 1. Another competitive contest in western North Carolina has received approximately $14.5 million in outside spending.
Rising Prices Create Problems for Trump
Trump’s declining popularity comes amid concerns about fuel prices and the economy. In February, the US military conducted strikes against Iran, which led to increases in gasoline and diesel prices.
According to Reuters/Ipsos polling, 68% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy. This includes 37% of respondents who identify as Republicans.
Some voters who previously supported the Republican Party have also expressed frustration. Greenville resident Taylor Smith told Reuters that problems within the administration had made her reconsider her political support. She criticised the government’s apparent lack of organisation and called for stronger leadership.
During the rally, Trump also announced potential investments in North Carolina’s industrial and semiconductor industries. However, he provided few details about the projects.
He also repeated his promise to give eligible American adults $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress. Trump warned supporters that the proposed payments would not happen if his party lost the election. With election day approaching, the North Carolina contests could become an important test of Trump’s influence and the Republican Party’s ability to maintain its political strength.
