Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan was recently honored at the Indian Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) in Canada, where he received the inaugural Golden Beaver Award. The ceremony took place in Edmonton, Alberta, where the event is being hosted. Photos from the event were shared by the festival’s official Instagram account, along with a message explaining the meaning behind the new award. Described as “a symbol of creativity and resilience,” the Golden Beaver is inspired by Canada’s national animal.

According to organizers, the award celebrates individuals who, like the beaver, reshape their surroundings with vision and persistence. Kamal Haasan was praised for his lasting contributions to cinema and his role in building cultural bridges through his work. The award was presented by Madhan Selvaraj, Executive Director of IFFA, and Masakui Rungsung, Consul General of India. Among the other notable attendees were actor Sivakarthikeyan and director Rajkumar Periasamy.

In addition to the festival appearance, Kamal Haasan was warmly received by Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor of Edmonton. In a post shared on Instagram, Mayor Sohi expressed his admiration for the celebrated actor. “It was a pleasure to welcome the legendary Kamal Haasan to Edmonton,” he wrote. “His work as an actor, writer, director, and politician has inspired millions around the world. We look forward to further cultural exchange between our communities.”

This marks Kamal Haasan’s first visit to Canada in nearly three decades. He was originally scheduled to attend the festival in early September, but his trip was postponed due to political commitments. On the professional front, Kamal Haasan was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. He is currently working on a new project helmed by action choreographer duo Anbariv, tentatively titled KH 237. The actor also has Indian 3 and Kalki 2 in the pipeline.
