Aviation and Airlines (Commonwealth Union) _ The projected loss of Rs. 112 billion ($389 million) for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in 2023 highlights the airline’s critical financial predicament, making privatization the only feasible solution. PIA’s challenges persist as it struggles to recover from the impact of the pandemic, resulting in even greater losses compared to the Rs. 80 billion ($278 million) deficits in 2022. Insiders are forecasting potential annual losses of Rs. 259 billion ($900 million) by 2030 if the current trajectory continues. With existing debts amounting to Rs. 742 billion ($2.5 billion), concerns are arising about the sustainability of the airline in its current form. The dire financial outlook underscores the urgency of addressing PIA’s structural and financial issues.

Addressing the alarming financial predictions, Pakistani Aviation Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique emphasized that privatization is the sole remedy to mitigate PIA’s substantial losses. Subsequently, the government officially confirmed privatization plans, incorporating PIA into its active privatization projects following legal amendments.

Safety concerns have compounded PIA’s financial crisis, particularly a fake license scandal in 2020 that led to suspensions of 141 pilots and bans from key markets, including the EU, UK, and US. However, a potential resurgence is signalled by the carrier’s passing of the initial stage of an EASA safety audit, indicating a potential return to European skies. Should this materialize, PIA’s long-haul fleet of Boeing 777s could potentially operate routes to airports like London Heathrow, Manchester, and Paris.

Currently, these aircraft are deployed on PIA’s somewhat limited long-haul network encompassing destinations like Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, and Beijing. Privatization and the potential reinstatement of routes to the EU, UK, and US may mark a pivotal moment for the struggling airline, offering a glimmer of hope for its future recovery. Only time will reveal if these developments lead to the desired turnaround.
