Chennai, India (CU)_ Chennai Apollo Hospitals achieved India’s first multimodal management of bone metastasis from kidney with single stage mega prosthesis replacement of Femur and laparoscopic nephrectomy. Dr Vijay Kishore Reddy, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital, addressed the media on Sunday and said that a 54-year-old woman from Assam had fractured her left thigh bone two months ago and was suffering from a minor injury, which made her unable to move around.
After an assessment and biopsy, it was identified that she had metastatic left renal cell carcinoma, a malignant lesion in the kidney. At Chennai Apollo Hospitals, doctors attempted a new approach and performed two surgeries on the patient at the same time. Both surgeries took six hours to complete.
The tumor-bearing knee joint was operated and removed with wide margins and restored with a mega prosthesis. In addition to this, the patient also had a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, which is a kidney removal surgery, operated via three small 5mm holes in the belly. Following the operation, the patient was mobilized the next day and asked to walk. As the CT scan showed a local nodal spread, complete nodal clearing was also done in order to improve the survival rate.
According to Dr. Vijay Kishore, due to the prevailing pandemic, travel constraints and fear of Covid, cancer patients most often visit hospitals late. This has resulted in unnecessary delays in detection and treatment, ending up with the late presentation of a tumor that has widespread and reached its final stage. The key to combating this lethal disease is early diagnosis and treatment using a multi-modal approach.
