China tells Taiwan that independence ‘means war’

On Thursday 28th January 2021, China made a strong speech aimed at Taiwan, indicating that its independence would lead to a war.

The Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian was conducting his monthly press conference when the subject in question turned into regions tensions as reported by Reuters.

Beijing was accused by Taipei for a dozen of their military jets flying in its airspace on Sunday which is clearly an act of intimidation. According to US observers, China had every intention of analyzing or trying to assess President Biden, who took oaths a few days prior.

Wu said the “military activities” in the Taiwan Straits “are necessary actions to address the current security situation” there and then he warned, “Those who play with fire will burn themselves and ‘Taiwan independence’ means war.”

It was during the civil war in 1949 that Taiwan and China split.  Nevertheless China is adamant to get back the island and have control over it even if means by force. The US Diplomatic switch recognizing Taipei from Beijing took place in 1979. Nevertheless the US is legally bound to make sure that Taiwan can stand for itself and that the self-governing democratic island is able to get bilateral support in Washington.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a confirmation hearing Tuesday there is “no doubt” China poses the greatest threat of any nation to the US and the Trump administration was right to take a tougher stance against the Asian power.

“President Trump was right in taking a tougher approach to China,” said Blinken, who served as then-Vice President Biden’s national security advisor before being elevated to deputy secretary of state under Barack Obama. “Not the way he went about it in a number of ways, but the basic principle was right.”
