Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary, testified heavily on Thursday as part of the House Oversight Committee’s continued investigation regarding convicted sex offenders Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, marking it as one of the most politically sensitive moments when it comes to the full investigation.

Appearing for more than six hours of a closed-door questioning, which was held at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center in Chappaqua, New York, where she and former President Bill Clinton resided. In the latter stage of this week, Bill Clinton has also been scheduled to face a questioning, which is marking itself as a highlighted event, as this would be the very first time a former U.S. president has been compelled to make an appearance before Congress in such an inquiry.

Clinton repeatedly mentioned that she was completely unaware and had no knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and did not fail to mention that she does not recall ever being acquainted with him in her testimony. She continued by highlighting that she had never flown on his plane or visited his properties or islands. She also mentioned that she did not obtain any new information to provide on Epstein or his close associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.

Clinton’s opening statement was posted on social media and delivered at the start of the deposition, where she described her horror at Epstein’s criminal activities, which involved widespread abuse and exploitation of minors, but stressed she was not personally connected in any substantive way.

The controversy was high during these proceedings. At one certain point, statements which were taken under oath were briefly paused, after Republican rep, Lauren Boebert supposedly shared an image from inside the private session, which was a violation of committee rules and regulations. Clinton, however, responded later and urged that future testimony be open for the media to heighten the greater transparency.

Clinton’s appearance sparked sharp reactions along partisan lines. By accusing Republican members of using the deposition to score higher political points, including diverting their attention from other famous people, such as President Donald Trump, whose previous connections to Epstein have also resurfaced in the files that were released by the Justice Department.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer maintained the investigation is not accusing Clinton of wrongdoing but seeks to clarify Epstein’s network and government failures that enabled his abuses.
