Cold wave anticipated in New Delhi

NEW DELHI, India (CWBN) – With the temperature in New Delhi dipping below 10 degrees Celsius today (November 3), the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that they would declare a cold wave in the city if the temperature did not rise in within the next day. The temperature is the lowest to be recorded this season. 

The IMD also stated that the temperature this November is expected to be the coldest temperature in the last four to five years. When the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below and 4.5 notches less than normal for two consecutive days in the plains, the IMD declares a cold wave.  An IMD scientist also confirmed that the minimum temperature is expected to remain in single digits in the next three to four days. The absence of cloud cover and cold winds from the higher regions of the Himachal Pradesh are believed to have caused the unusually cold weather, the IMD stated. 

In December 2019, the maximum day temperature in New Delhi reached a record low of 9.4 degrees Celsius – the coldest day since records began in 1901. Before then, the coldest temperature was recorded at 9.8 degrees Celsius in January 2013.
