Commonwealth introduces an online course on…

-

United Kingdom (Commonwealth Union)_ The Commonwealth Secretariat has recently launched a series of new comprehensive online courses aimed at equipping law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and judicial authorities with the necessary skills to effectively handle cybercrime cases involving electronic evidence. These courses provide a thorough understanding of key concepts in cybercrime law and offer practical knowledge on the collection, preservation, analysis, authentication, and admissibility of electronic evidence.

Further, the courses also cover vital procedural aspects such as conducting investigations and carrying out search and seize operations. Recognizing the importance of international cooperation, the courses also provide standard practices to be followed for securing cross-border data access, including through mutual legal assistance programs. After successfully completing the courses, participants will be granted certificates that enhance their professional development credentials and their ability to handle cybercrime effectively within their respective regions.

Dr. Tawanda Hondora, Head of Rule of Law at the Commonwealth Secretariat, expressed the organization’s commitment to promoting a secure and powerful digital landscape across the Commonwealth and beyond. He emphasized that these basic online courses serve as an invaluable tool in combating the increasing threat of cybercrime by equipping criminal justice officials with the necessary skills and knowledge. He further added that by enhancing capacity, improving cooperation, and establishing harmonized practices, Commonwealth nations can effectively handle the challenges posed by cybercrime and ensure the delivery of justice.

The courses cover various reputable resources, including the Commonwealth Good Practice Guide on Digital Evidence and internationally recognized best practices, to encourage a consistent and harmonized approach to investigating, prosecuting, and handling electronic evidence in cybercrime cases. Further, by fostering greater collaboration among Commonwealth member countries in strengthening anti-cybercrime and cybersecurity efforts, these courses aim to promote a united front against cybercriminals. Developed by the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Cyber Unit in collaboration with the United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), these courses represent a significant step towards building a resilient and secure digital environment.
