NIGERIA (Commonwealth Union) – Human Trafficking isn’t a new fear, it has always been a fear, but the problem is that it now happens everywhere. In the recent times human trafficking has gotten worse as you can get kidnapped and traffic just walking to the store from your house. This is why we are warned about making conversation with strangers or even being friendly to an unknown person.
Initially the fear was that it was always men who did it. Men kidnapped women and children and did horrendous things to them, but the game has now changed as women do this too. In the recent past all over the world women have also been arrested and or investigated for kidnapping people, mostly young children and foreign women, and then selling them off for human traffickers.
This worked better as women are seen as more trustworthy than men as cliché as that might sound. However, in Nigeria, there is a new thing where couples are getting together and getting into the game of human trafficking. The Ogun State police have just started an investigation on a couple who has been accused of being involved in human trafficking.
The two people had been arrested mid-October following a complaint and then a police report that had been submitted by a man who has been named as Adeniji Okikiolu. He had made the police report that his 16-year-old daughter Maria Adeniji had gone missing suddenly from their home a day prior to him coming to the police station to file the report. He had waited the legal 24 hours before reporting his daughter missing.
He had however gotten a search party together to find his daughter in case something had happened to her whilst she was out. It was then that he had found out that his daughter had been seen with a woman by the name of Eber Samuel and when he had confronted her, she had denied ever seeing the girl.
It was then that she and her husband were brought into the station where she maintained that she did not know who this girl was but the police were not convinced and she was detained at the station whilst they spoke to her husband. Her husband however cracked under pressure where he claimed that they took the girl and sold her to a millionaire family in Burkina Faso as a maid.
