Diaspora Voting Premature – NBA

-

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _Auta Nyada, the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Legal Education Committee, expressed scepticism about the feasibility of diaspora voting in Nigeria, stating that the country’s electoral system is not yet mature enough to accommodate it. Speaking at the Multi-stakeholders’ Forum on Youth Electoral Reform Priorities in Abuja, Nyada cautioned against introducing diaspora voting, emphasizing the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address existing electoral challenges first.

Nyada emphasized the challenges faced with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the 2023 general election, advocating for efforts to address these issues before considering the implementation of diaspora voting. He underscored the significance of leveraging advanced technology and establishing a robust security system to mitigate potential misuse of diaspora voting, highlighting vulnerabilities in the National Identification Number (NIN) system. By prioritizing the resolution of BVAS issues and ensuring the integrity of electoral processes through technological advancements and enhanced security measures, Nyada aimed to strengthen the credibility and reliability of the electoral system.

Nyada emphasized that while diaspora voting is important, it should be a consideration for the future rather than an immediate priority. He urged amendments to the Electoral Act to expedite the resolution of election disputes before elected officials take office. Nyada highlighted the crucial need for transparency and fairness in electoral processes, advocating for measures to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure accountability in election-related legal proceedings. By prioritizing timely resolution of disputes and implementing measures to uphold integrity in elections, Nyada aimed to strengthen the democratic process and enhance public trust in electoral outcomes.

Nyada’s remarks reflect a cautious approach to electoral reform in Nigeria, prioritizing the enhancement of domestic electoral infrastructure before expanding voting rights to citizens residing abroad. As discussions on electoral reform continue, stakeholders are urged to address systemic challenges and strengthen democratic institutions to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
