Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Global fashion brand Michael Kors has pledged $2.7 million to support Sri Lanka’s National School Meals Programme, a move welcomed by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The donation, part of Michael Kors’ long-running ‘Watch Hunger Stop’ campaign, will help expand WFP’s Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) initiative across the country. The funding will allow the program to grow from eight to ten districts, reaching 250,000 children with daily nutritious meals over the next three years. It will also support 1,500 local farmers and caterers who supply fresh, locally sourced produce, strengthening the link between schools and communities.

In addition to food support, 30 schools will receive upgrades, including solar-powered kitchens. These improvements aim to reduce costs, lower emissions, and promote sustainability while enhancing the learning environment for students. “We deeply value Michael Kors’ ongoing support,” said Philip Ward, WFP Representative and Country Director in Sri Lanka. “For many families, these meals are a lifeline, made possible by the dedication of local farmers and caterers who work tirelessly every day.”

The World Food Programme’s Home-Grown School Feeding initiative seeks to strengthen local food systems while also increasing the sustainability of the national school meal program. It aims to help female farmers and meal suppliers grow vegetables and raise poultry, ensuring that students receive fresh, safe, and nutritious meals. The plan benefits not only children but also rural livelihoods, women’s economic empowerment, and national food security. As part of its 2025 campaign, Michael Kors introduced two special-edition T-shirts featuring photographs of fruits and vegetables grown through WFP’s initiative. Made from a cotton and linen blend, the T-shirts are available online and in select stores worldwide, with all profits donated to WFP.

Michael Kors has partnered with WFP since 2013, helping deliver more than 35 million school meals globally. Sri Lanka has been chosen as the first country for this new phase of support. The program will deliver solar panels, upgraded kitchens, and improved classrooms to 30 schools over three years, supporting 3,000 kids. The project also connects local farmers with school caterers, providing farmers with a steady source of income and kids with food they need to grow, thrive, and stay in school.
