ABUJA, Nigeria (CWBN)_ Commenting on the incident where live rounds were shot at peaceful, unarmed ‘EndSARS’ protestors on the 20th of October, this year, near Lekki’s toll gate, the Inspector General of Nigerian Police, Mohammed Adamu, stated that, “Your arms are supposed to be used to protect lives and property.”

He also noted that police officers are constitutionally authorized to use their firearms when “individuals or group of people are unlawful” and that “When you use your firearm, you are supposed to maim.”

“Nobody can demoralise us; nobody can prevent or make us shy away from performing our duties. The responsibility of protecting lives and property is given to the police and you are licensed to carry arms.” he added “We are encouraging you to go out there and perform your duties without fear or favour and without being afraid of any victimisation. Be courageous, be civil and be calm and follow the procedures in performing your duties.”

According to Amnesty International, about twelve protestors were killed, whereas foreign news reported as many twenty deaths. The actual number of casualties remains uncertain.

However, it has been verified that military personnel dispatched from Bonny Camp, a nearby military installation, were present at the site of the protest, and were among those who used firearms of protestors.

The killings have been condemned by world leaders, and just a few days ago, the British Parliament debated the necessity of sanctioning Nigerian leadership and terminating the training program made available to the former colony.
