Entertainment (Commonwealth Union) _ In one of the most significant ongoing cases, a key figure in the music industry, Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy, was denied bail following his conviction on the charge based on transportation to engage in prostitution. Although the rap mogul has been acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, Judge Arun Subramanian rules that Combs is to be kept in custody until the time of his sentencing, which has been scheduled in October.
The high-profile trial lasted around seven weeks, with prosecutors describing Combs’s business empire as a web of criminal activity. The trial featured over 30 witnesses, including Combs’s former girlfriend and musician, Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura, who presented a string of troubling testimonies. The jury considered evidence for a period of over 13 hours before providing a partial verdict.
The judge justified his decision to keep the rapper behind bars until the sentencing, implying that Combs’ history of violence, along with the severity of the case, has contributed towards the decision. The court stood by the decision even as his defence team argued that there is no flight risk, with his private jet still being grounded in Hawaii. The jury countered that the decision had been partly due to the admission that Combs had been violent in former relationships.
Marc Agnifilo, Combs’ attorney, made a plea for the release of his client, stating that Combs had enrolled in a domestic violence program out of his volition prior to his arrest and has not committed any acts of violence since 2018. However, Ventura and other victims presented a letter claiming that the rapper’s release could potentially pose a risk.
The case was also largely built on a concerning video taken in 2016 in which Sean Combs is seen physically assaulting Ventura in a hallway of a hotel in Los Angeles. The footage has been verified by the staff working at the establishment and was involved in a cover-up attempt where Combs allegedly offered compensation to the security workers if they deleted it.
Prosecutors have also accused the music mogul of coercing women into partaking in activities that have been dubbed ‘freak-offs’. Ventura claimed that the rapper threatened to release recordings of the encounters involving her if she became noncompliant with his demands. The case rested heavily on her testimony, along with Kid Cudi’s.
Despite the jury ultimately ruling against the charges of racketeering, they found him guilty of facilitating prostitution. The acquitted charges of sex trafficking and racketeering previously put him at the risk of receiving a life sentence, signalling a partial win for the defence. However, the ruled conviction could lead to Combs facing an incarceration period of up to 20 years.
At the moment, Combs is being held in a detention centre in Brooklyn, where he has remained since September 2024, when he was initially arrested. His tentative date to be sentenced is October 3rd.
In addition, Combs is still involved in several civil lawsuits in relation to sexual assault and violence allegations.
