In an effort to enhance digital connectivity, promote e-commerce, and stimulate job creation, the Kenyan government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to provide free Wi-Fi access across the country.

Recognizing the transformative potential of internet connectivity, particularly in driving economic growth and expanding opportunities, this initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and empower Kenyan citizens with greater access to online resources. This article provides an overview of the implementation of free Wi-Fi in Kenya, its potential impact on e-commerce, and the anticipated benefits for job creation and economic development.

President William Ruto has expressed his commitment to implementing a project that aims to provide 25,000 free WiFi hotspots across Kenya. Speaking at the Madaraka Day SMEs, Cooperatives, Trade, and Revenue Expo in Embu, Ruto emphasized that this initiative would greatly benefit micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by enabling them to engage in e-commerce activities and expand their businesses.

He also highlighted that the provision of free WiFi would create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth, who would have access to various online jobs and millions of opportunities.

Moreover, as a demonstration of his commitment, Ruto inaugurated the Embu University Free WiFi and outlined his vision of connecting all households to a national internet grid throughout the country. This ambitious plan aims to ensure that every household in Kenya has access to the internet, enabling them to benefit from digital services, education, and information.

The event at Embu was attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, several Cabinet Secretaries, and other prominent leaders, indicating the government’s collective support for the initiative. The provision of free WiFi hotspots across Kenya is expected to contribute to the country’s digital transformation, economic growth, and job creation, particularly for MSMEs and the youth.
