Chennai (Commonwealth Union)_ Actor Prashanth Thiagarajan has taken on a new role away from the big screen, becoming the Kerala government’s ambassador for its anti-drug campaign. The move brings a familiar face from Tamil cinema into the state’s efforts to warn young people about the dangers of drug use. Prashanth was in Kerala to participate in a major boat race, where he joined several political leaders and senior government officials. During the event, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced his appointment and presented him with a special badge recognising his new responsibility.

The campaign, being carried out by the Kerala government and police, is part of Operation Toofan, an initiative aimed at tackling drug trafficking and reducing drug use across the state. A key focus is on preventing young people and students from becoming involved with drugs. Prashanth’s involvement could give the campaign a stronger connection with its target audience. Government and police warnings can sometimes fail to attract the attention of young people, particularly when they are delivered through traditional awareness programmes. A well-known actor, however, can reach audiences through a language and image that young fans already recognise.
Prashanth has maintained a strong connection with Tamil cinema audiences since the 1990s, with films such as Vaikasi Poranthachu, Sembaruthi, Jeans and Winner helping establish his popularity. His screen presence, dancing and style earned him a sizeable following, particularly among younger viewers of that era. That popularity could now become an advantage in Kerala’s anti-drug campaign. Prashanth can perhaps make the message more visible and relatable by leveraging his public image to speak directly to young people. There is also a symbolic aspect to his new role. An actor who was once known for playing heroes on screen is now being asked to take on a real-world fight against a problem threatening the lives and futures of young people.
