Hollywood icon Tom Cruise, 62, was honored with the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award on December 17, 2024, recognizing his decades-long advocacy for the Navy and Marine Corps. Presented by Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, the award is the highest distinction the Navy can bestow on a civilian.

Cruise’s portrayal of naval aviators in the blockbuster films Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022) played a pivotal role in boosting public awareness and appreciation for the Navy. His consistent support for service members through film projects has inspired generations to join the military, as acknowledged by the U.S. Navy.

The recognition highlighted Cruise’s decades of efforts to raise the public’s awareness of sacrifices made by military personnel through cinematic storytelling. His performances have been credited with enhancing the Navy’s public image and encouraging military enlistment.

Cruise’s portrayal of fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun led to a dramatic increase in Navy recruitment in the late 1980s and early 1990s, where, following the film’s release, the Navy set up recruitment booths at theaters nationwide.

The 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick shattered box office records, grossing over $1.4 billion globally and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The film’s aerial combat scenes were created using IMAX cameras mounted inside F-18 cockpits flown by real Navy pilots, enhancing its authenticity, with retired Navy pilot Frank “Walleye” Weisser piloting Cruise’s fighter jet during filming.

Cruise’s connection to the military extends beyond the Top Gun franchise. He portrayed a Navy lawyer in A Few Good Men (1992) and a Marine Corps sergeant in Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

In 2020, the Navy named Cruise an honorary naval aviator, allowing him to wear the prestigious “wings of gold.” The Navy specifically acknowledged his dedication to ensuring the Top Gun franchise remained authentic and respectful of military traditions.

The Distinguished Public Service Award also recognized the collaborative efforts of Cruise’s film crews in bringing military stories to life; his cinematic achievements continue to shape public perceptions of the armed forces.

Fans of the actor can look forward to his upcoming film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to premiere on May 23, 2025.
