Inspired by her elder brother, an officer in the Indian Army, Avani harbored dreams of joining the defense forces from a young age.
Avani pursued a bachelor’s degree in technology from Banasthali Vidyapith, Rajasthan, graduating in 2014. It was during her time at the university’s aviation club that she developed an interest in flying, where she cleared the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and was recommended by the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), setting the foundation for her groundbreaking career.
Breaking Barriers in the Indian Air Force
In October 2015, the Indian government took a historic step by opening the fighter stream to women. Avani Chaturvedi, along with Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh, became India’s first female fighter pilots in June 2016, being formally commissioned into the Indian Air Force fighter squadron by then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on June 18, 2016.
Avani underwent rigorous training at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Hyderabad, followed by advanced instruction on the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer at Air Force Station Bidar. On February 19, 2018, she etched her name in history as the first Indian woman to fly a MiG-21 Bison solo, a milestone that highlighted her skill and determination.
