Liverpool, England, 9 October 2026 – What happens when a person who is required to enforce the law is the one accused and judged? An 82-minute audio recording of a sexual assault has been released from Liverpool. The media has been buzzing about the case of the ex-police officer who received an 11-year sentence.

Ryan Theaker, aged 30, was sentenced in Liverpool Crown Court on October 8, 2026, after a jury found him guilty of rape and sexual crimes committed against a woman he previously knew. The judge imposed a term of an additional five years in an extended licence, which would mean some years of supervision after his release from prison. The court categorised him as a dangerous offender, as reported by the media.

This case drew attention not only for the seriousness of the crimes but also for the audio recording made during the attack that allowed the victim’s story to be heard in court.

One of the recordings had the victim begging the attacker several times

The crime happened in a hotel room in Liverpool in 2023, when Theaker was not working. Sahara Reporters published an article about this incident on October 8, 2026, confirming that at some moments the woman told the attacker to stop doing what he did. The recording proves that the woman said the phrase “get off me” more than 300 times during the assault.

The prosecutor Gareth Roberts told the court that Theaker insisted on naked pictures of the victim despite her numerous refusals and used sex toys during the assault. According to the information provided to the court, the woman cried throughout the crime, and the man continued the violence.

Judge Brian Cummings KC called the recordings terrifying. The court was also informed that while the assault was going on the attacker forced the woman to take her clothes off, took pictures of her without her permission and committed some other acts of sexual violence against her.

According to the information provided by Merseyside Police and reported by Theaker on October 8, 2026, Theaker was found guilty of a single charge of rape and two charges of sexual assault.

The delays from reporting to sentencing

Although the victim reported the crimes to the police in August 2024, this was several months after the crimes had occurred in the hotel room. The victim’s testimony showed how the psychological effects on her were later serious and included a suicide attempt.

Judge Cummings stated that Theaker’s action was at least an important factor that led the victim to her suicide attempt. In this case, there is much greater damage than the physical attack itself.

At sentencing, the victim addressed the man who had harmed her and stated that she considered him a “monster” and requested how he could possibly be a police officer in the past. Her words also demonstrated the spirit necessary to obtain the justice needed despite a heavy emotional burden.

The victim’s decision to report the crime proved to be one of the crucial components of the case that passed the way from the investigation to the conviction.

Police background marred by the analysis of wrongdoing

In August 2024, authorities initiated criminal proceedings against the 30-year-old former officer after receiving reports of sexual offences. As part of that targeted criminal investigation, the Merseyside Police Department seized and examined Theaker’s mobile phone.

During the digital forensics examination, internal investigators uncovered separate, distinct misconduct evidence. Theaker had used the messaging application WhatsApp to transmit two highly discriminatory videos within a group chat on February 4, 2021, and March 9, 2021. The Merseyside Police officially clarified that these specific videos were explicitly ableist in nature and completely unrelated to the core sexual offences and rape case under prosecution.

Misconduct Hearing and Force Exit

In August 2025, Merseyside Police brought forward an accelerated misconduct hearing to address the offensive communications. Theaker resigned from the police force the day before the panel officially convened.

Justice, responsibility, and the confidence associated with a uniform

The judicial system’s serious response to the crime is evident in Theaker’s 11-year imprisonment, followed by a five-year extended licence. Nevertheless, the extended punishment means that he will be accountable even after he finishes his custodial sentence.

However, this case raises the following issue: how can the public trust remain unaffected when a person, who is supposed to deliver justice, is guilty of violating the personal rights of another person?

As for the victim of the case, the punishment is not going to change anything about what happened in the hotel in Liverpool. On the other hand, the testimony of the victim led to the trial and proved to be efficient, as the criminal did not stop the woman despite her pleas.

This result demonstrates that the uniform cannot provide anyone an opportunity to escape punishment and the position of power does not justify sexual abuse.
