Going green on blue sea

-

Agriculture and Climate Change (Commonwealth Union) _Shipowners in Europe have expressed their strong support for sweeping new regulations aimed at accelerating the transition to green energy across the European Union. The European Parliament, meeting in Strasbourg, has adopted a groundbreaking new law designed to ramp up industrial capacity for green technologies throughout Europe.

The European shipowners association, known as ECSA, welcomed the inclusion of clean fuels for shipping, including advanced biofuels and e-fuels, in the list of net-zero technologies outlined in the Net-Zero Industry Act. This legislation introduces a benchmark for the Commission and EU Member States to match 40% of the deployment needs for clean fuels for shipping with production capacity.

According to ECSA, this move is crucial for ensuring the availability of clean fuels in the market at an affordable price, a prerequisite for the shipping industry to meet its targets under the Fuel EU Maritime Regulation. Scaling up the production and uptake of clean fuels is a top priority for European shipping.

Sotiris Raptis, Secretary General of ECSA, emphasized the importance of European fuel suppliers scaling up and making clean, affordable, and safe fuels readily available in the market. He hailed the 40% benchmark for the production of clean fuels as a significant step towards the international expansion of alternative sustainable fuels for shipping.

The Net-Zero Industry Act, which has been informally agreed upon with the Council, sets ambitious targets for Europe to produce 40% of its annual deployment needs in net-zero technologies by 2030. This includes capturing 15% of the global market value for these technologies. The Act supports various renewable technologies, industrial decarbonization, and energy storage, among others.

The legislation also streamlines the permitting process, establishing maximum timelines for project authorization based on scope and output. Additionally, it creates “Net-Zero Acceleration Valleys” initiatives to expedite the permitting process by delegating certain environmental assessment tasks to member states.

Lead MEP Christian Ehler hailed the vote as a positive development for European industry, emphasizing the importance of making the market conducive to achieving economic, climate, and energy goals. The Act also mandates that national support schemes for transitioning households and consumers to renewable energy technologies consider sustainability and resilience criteria.

In summary, the adoption of the Net-Zero Industry Act represents a significant milestone in Europe’s efforts to promote sustainable shipping and accelerate the transition to green energy across industries.
