India (Commonwealth Union) _ According to a press statement from the Union Health Ministry, the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) has granted the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India recognition status for a period of ten years. This will make it possible for graduates of Indian medical schools to pursue postgraduate education and practice in nations including the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand that want WFME certification.

The National Medical Commission (NMC), India, is happy to celebrate its historic accomplishment of receiving the coveted World Federation for Medical Education recognition status for a remarkable term of 10 years, according to the press release.

This esteemed award is proof of NMC’s steadfast dedication to the highest standards in medical education and accreditation. Following this accomplishment, all 706 of India’s medical colleges are now WFME-accredited. Additionally, the new medical schools that will open in the next ten years will also receive WFME accreditation.

It’s important to note that this move would probably make India a desirable location for foreign students. “WFME’s recognition underscores that the quality of medical education in India complies with global standards,” said Yogender Malik, Member of the Ethics and Medical Registration Board and Head of the Media Division at NMC, in the statement. This recognition gives students the freedom to pursue their careers anywhere in the world and promotes India as a desirable study abroad country due to the widely respected standards.

Additionally, as per the release, all Indian students are now entitled to apply to the Education Commission on Foreign Medical Education and the United States Medical Licensing Examination as a result of NMC receiving WFME accreditation.

India’s top regulatory agency in charge of regulating medical practice and instruction is the National Medical Commission, or NMC. A multinational organization called the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is committed to raising medical education standards all around the world. The PIB and WFME’s accreditation program are crucial in ensuring that medical institutions adhere to and uphold the highest levels of global education and training standards.

In August 2022, the NMC submitted an application for WFME recognition. Indian medical graduates studying at NMC-approved medical institutions will be able to sit for the United States Medical Licentiate Examination (USMLE) for postgraduate studies once they have received the WFME recognition. A formal award letter and a recognition certificate will also be given to the NMC by the WFME.

The NMC has expressed appreciation to WFME for the acknowledgment. According to Yogender Malik, the WFME’s recognition underlines that the quality of medical education in India complies with international norms, member of the ethics and medical registration board, and head of the media section at NMC. This recognition gives the students the freedom to pursue their careers anywhere in the globe and promotes India as a desirable study abroad location due to the widely respected standards.

The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is an international non-governmental organization that collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Medical Association to promote medical education and training around the world. WFME had been independently certifying medical colleges since its founding in 1972. It has now made the decision to exclusively recognize single accreditation body, and any approvals provided by this body will result in an institution’s automatic WFME accreditation.

The primary goal of WFME is to “improve the quality of medical education globally by promoting the highest ethical and scientific standards in medical education.  WFME collaborates with its six Regional Associations for Medical Education, as well as with associate members, medical schools all around the world, and other international organizations including the World Health Organization and the World Medical Association (WMA).
