“Get Ghana Housed”, will be focused on the supply and services sectors, which have been driving the economic growth of the West African nation. They include the public servants of the country who continue to face extensive accommodation challenges. In order to tackle the matter, the Minister of State, for the Ministry of works and housing revealed that the government’s plans to construct over 6,500 new houses, as part of its  commitment to provide the citizenry with decent, safe, quality and affordable housing.

An address that was read on behalf of Minister Freda Prempeh at the 13th Ghana Property Awards said that from next year, Accra intends to begin the construction of 6,584 new housing units, which will accommodate public servants across the country on a rental basis.

According to the minister, of the 6,163 housing units in which construction had begun under former President John Kufuor’s administration, in Kpone, Borteyman and Asokore Mampong, 2,773 have been already been completed by the Tema Development Company (TDC) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). “The sector Ministry in collaboration with the State Housing Company is currently continuing and completing 686 affordable housing units at Koforidua, Tamale and Wa in the Eastern, Northern and Upper West regions respectively,” she added.

Accordingly, Prempeh called on financial institutions in the country to support the government in the efforts of purchasing or constructing new houses, or renovating old ones, in the form of personal loans or mortgage schemes.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in Ghana and across the world, had a severe impact on the housing industry of the African state. Nevertheless, the situation is now gradually returning to normal for the sector, which aims to deliver quality and affordable housing to the country’s population.
