SYDNEY, Australia (CWBN)_All of Greater Sydney and the Central Coast in New South Wales will be classified as a ‘red zone’ in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The move bars anyone who is currently in or recently visited these areas and travelling back to Victoria. “If you do arrive back or travel here you will face 14 days of mandatory hotel quarantine,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

However, residents of Victoria who return home before the end of Monday (Dec 21) would have the opportunity to self-quarantine for 14 days at their home, after being tested within 24 hours following their return.

These border restrictions were prompted by the surge in cases, as NSW reported 30 new infections on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania are among the territories which announced new travel rules for people arriving from NSW.

Queensland called on travellers entering from the northern beaches region on Friday, or arriving on a fight from Sydney after 1am Saturday, must go into hotel quarantine for 14 days at their own expense. The Northern Territory and Tasmania have also declared the northern beaches area a “hotspot”.
