Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – Educators and educational leaders hailing from various regions of England are gearing up to engage in an AI hackathon during a two-day event. The purpose of this event is to explore the possibilities of technology and discover how artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the field of education.

AI is already making a significant impact on society, contributing to economic growth and enhancing the delivery of public services. In the realm of education, AI holds immense promise, from assisting teachers in administrative tasks to providing tailored feedback to students on their academic work.

To harness these potential benefits, the Department for Education, in partnership with Faculty AI, the National Institute of Teaching, and the AI in Schools Initiative, is organizing an AI hackathon in London scheduled for October 30th and 31st. This event will assemble educators and leaders representing schools and educational trusts from across England, including the likes of Harris Federation, Star Academies, Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and Inspiration Trust.

Participants in this hackathon will be tasked with experimenting with AI technology to evaluate its capabilities in various scenarios. For instance, they will explore whether AI can generate lesson plans or accurately grade exam papers.

Furthermore, secondary school students will have the opportunity to contribute their insights and expertise. The most exceptional solutions will be presented to the department’s workload reduction taskforce, and a demonstration of the developed tools will be accessible for schools nationwide to test and utilize. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal of reducing teachers’ and leaders’ work hours by five hours per week.

Gillian Keegan, the Education Secretary, indicated that throughout her career in the technology industry, she has witnessed innovation in practice.

“Artificial intelligence has huge potential to transform the way we do things, from providing personalised support for pupils to helping tackle teacher workload.”
