Ontario, Canada (CU)_ Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) remains one of Canada’s leading research hospitals. HHS was placed fourth in the 2020 list of Top 40 Research Hospitals in Canada. Rankings are compiled by Research Infosource Inc. based on total research spending. Dr. Ted Scott, vice president of research and chief innovation officer at HHS, said, “HHS has been holding strong in the top four for the past eight years. This ranking further establishes HHS as a leader in health research investment nationally and internationally.”

Additionally, HHS was placed ninth in terms of researcher intensity. According to the healthcare institute, it demonstrates their researchers’ capacity to attract significant investment. HHS ranks third in terms of investment intensity as a percentage of total hospital spending. Scott added, “HHS is conducting groundbreaking research across the hospital system. We strive to improve our rankings in this category as we continue to attract more and more investment in cutting-edge research.”

With $490.0 million in research spending, University Health Network in Toronto was the highest spender, followed by the Hospital for Sick Children with $282.0 million, McGill University Health Centre with $206.1 million, Hamilton Health Sciences with $171.1 million, and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority with $164.7 million. In the meantime, McMaster University in Hamilton ranked high in a 2021 ranking of the most research-intensive universities in the country.

According to the Research Infosource rankings, Mac was ranked first in graduate student research intensity, with an average of $68,900 per graduate student, and second in faculty research intensity, with an average of $369,400 per faculty member. Both figures are significantly higher than the national average with $48K and $271K. In addition, McMaster ranked third place among medical schools in terms of sponsored research revenue, with $353.5 million in total.
