Hanae Mori, pioneering Japanese fashion designer dies aged 96

 Asia into the fashion world and it can be said that she didn’t have an easy journey. By the time she entered the game other countries like England and America had come in and taken over. So, she had to fight and claw her way in and then also work twice as hard to make her name known.

Hanae Mori the first Asian fashion designer to break into the exclusive world of haute couture. This was a huge deal Haute Couture is like a fancy clique in high school that everyone wants to be in but can’t. It’s something you have to work your way in to and that is exactly what she did.

She lived her best life and that is what we celebrate today. She was Born in Shimane prefecture, Japan, in 1926. She started her career in 1951 by opening her first studio in Tokyo. She then built her career in the next 3 years making costumes for the movie industry which was known as the golden age of Japanese cinema.

To speak of her later achievements, she has dressed high profile figures such as Hillary Clinton to Empress Masako. Mori has commented that “It helped move the scales from my eyes, The whole Japanese concept of beauty is based on concealment…I suddenly realized that I should change my approach and make my dresses help a woman stand out.”

She has left us after 96 years of celebrations and also a fashion legacy that not only Japan but Asia can be proud of.
