This case involves a 38-year-old man from the Malappuram district in Kerala, who had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates. Health authorities have stated that the patient is currently stable and is being closely monitored under medical supervision.
The Mpox Clade 1b strain is particularly alarming due to its classification as a rapidly spreading variant, endemic to Central Africa, and linked with severe health complications. The WHO‘s heightened alert is a response to a significant rise in infections reported across several African nations, which has prompted the organization to classify Mpox as a public health emergency for the second time in a month.
In addition to this recent case, India had previously reported another instance of Mpox involving a 26-year-old resident from Hisar, Haryana, who tested positive for the West African Clade 2 strain earlier this month. Since the WHO declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2022, India has recorded a total of 30 cases. The diverse strains underscore the need for comprehensive public health strategies to address the evolving nature of the disease.
The ongoing outbreak has posed significant challenges for numerous countries in Africa. According to the WHO, over 30,000 suspected cases of Mpox have been documented this year, with the Democratic Republic of Congo bearing the brunt of the crisis. Alarmingly, more than 800 deaths attributed to suspected Mpox infections have been reported across the continent, with neighboring Burundi also experiencing a surge in cases.
