Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ India has initiated an investigation into the alleged conspiracy to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh extremist holding American and Canadian citizenship. The US federal prosecutors have charged Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, with involvement in the thwarted plot against Pannun. Addressing the situation, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, expressed concern, characterizing it as contrary to government policy. He underscored the serious issue of an international nexus between organized crime, trafficking, gunrunning, and extremists. In response to the allegations, India has formed a high-level inquiry committee to probe the matter, with the government committed to following its results.

The case has garnered attention as it involves potential international ramifications, prompting the Biden administration to take proactive measures. The Washington Post reported that, upon discovering the plot, the administration sent high-ranking officials, including CIA Director William J Burns and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, to India in August and October, respectively. Their mission was to demand a thorough investigation and accountability for those implicated in the conspiracy.

The External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the issue seriously, considering the complex intersection of criminal activities and extremist elements. The formation of the probe team signifies a concerted effort to unravel the intricacies surrounding the alleged conspiracy. The inquiry committee is expected to delve into various aspects of the case, shedding light on the involvement of individuals and potential links to organized crime.

The Financial Times had previously reported on the foiled plot to kill Pannun and raised concerns over the Indian government’s purported involvement. This prompted US authorities to issue a warning to India. The case not only highlights the significance of transnational cooperation in combating organized crime and extremism but also underscores the diplomatic challenges that may arise when addressing such sensitive matters.

In the ongoing investigation, the Indian government aims to uphold the principles of justice and transparency. As the probe unfolds, the international community will be watching closely, recognizing the need for collaboration in addressing threats that transcend borders. The case serves as a reminder of the intricate dynamics involved in tackling transnational criminal activities and the importance of fostering cooperation between nations to maintain global security.
