Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ India has called on Canada to create a conducive environment, in line with the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, to ensure Indian officials can perform their duties without hindrance or security concerns. This request follows recent attempts by pro-Khalistani elements in Vancouver to disrupt a camp organized by the Indian consulate. The incident occurred during a consular camp near Vancouver, where life certificates were being provided to pensioners. Despite attempts by radical elements to cause trouble, the event was successful. India emphasized the need for nations to respect the Vienna Convention, allowing diplomats to fulfill their obligations without interference.

Tensions between India and Canada heightened when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged in September potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India strongly rejected these allegations. In response, India temporarily suspended visa issuance to Canadian citizens and requested Canada to downsize its diplomatic presence for parity. Canada withdrew 41 diplomats and their family members from India. Some visa services have been resumed.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, highlighted that the consulates in Canada regularly organize consular camps, and the incident near Vancouver did not deter the successful execution of the event. Bagchi reiterated the importance of respecting diplomatic conventions to ensure the safety and effectiveness of diplomatic operations.

Regarding reports of an incident near Brampton during Diwali, Bagchi characterized it as “unrest” between two groups. He stated that there had been no complaints received by the consulate, and authorities in Canada were investigating the incident. Bagchi urged the need for nations to adhere to diplomatic protocols and reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties.

India’s call for a conducive environment aligns with its commitment to diplomatic norms and protocols, emphasizing the importance of respecting the Vienna Convention. The incidents in Vancouver and Brampton underscore the challenges in diplomatic relations, necessitating cooperation to ensure the security and effectiveness of diplomatic operations. The suspension of visa services and downsizing of diplomatic presence reflects India’s firm response to address the strains in bilateral relations caused by Trudeau’s allegations. As diplomatic efforts continue, India remains focused on safeguarding its officials’ ability to carry out their duties without compromise.
