What is this campaign about?
#India4UNSC is a socio-political campaign that aims to bring to global awareness the vital role that India plays in international politics and calls for their permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Ever since the creation of the UN Charter of 1945, five member states have held permanent seats on the Security Council, namely: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Commonwealth Union advocates for an additional seat to be added to the Security Council so that India, a Commonwealth country, as well as being the world’s largest democracy, can voice its opinion and make key decisions in the sphere of geopolitics.
Background Information
The principal responsibility of the Security Council is to maintain global peace and security. It has 15 members, and each member has one vote. Five of these members are permanent, while the other ten are elected, non-permanent members. In accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, all member states must comply with Council decisions. The UNSC is the body that determines the existence of a threat to global stability and has the authority to impose sanctions of non-compliant states and authorize the use of force to ensure that peace and security is maintained in the international order.
The topic of India’s procurement of a seat on the UNSC is not a new one, but an issue that dates as far back as the 1950s. India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, at the time failed to utilize several opportunities that India had to ascend to permanent membership within the UNSC. Instead, he decided to give up this seat to China as a means to foster diplomatic ties between the two nations. Since then however, India has been elected as a non-permanent member for eight terms.
The recent 2023 G-20 Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi has shown the world its ability to be a competent global leader. The view that India should gain a seat on one of the world’s most powerful tables was endorsed by multiple world leaders such as President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, African Union President Azali Assoumani, UK Prime Minster Rishi Sunak, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong. This sentiment has also been echoed by the United Nations General Assembly President,
Dennis Francis, who said that “to become a permanent member is an extremely weighty responsibility, which I am sure is not beyond the capacity of the government of India.”
