USA (Commonwealth Union)_ Renowned Indian American scholar Arogyaswami Paulraj, a distinguished Emeritus Professor at Stanford University and advisor at Celesta Capital, was honored with the esteemed 2023 Faraday Medal by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London. This significant accolade, a symbol of recognition from a global community, recognizes the remarkable contributions made by engineers and technologists worldwide. The Faraday Medal stands as a pinnacle among the world’s most esteemed awards, specifically commemorating engineers and scientists whose groundbreaking innovations have had a profound influence on global technological advancements. The recent ceremony, held in London, marked a historic moment as Dr. Paulraj became the 100th recipient of this illustrious award, celebrating his invaluable contributions to wireless technology.

Professor Paulraj received this prestigious honor for his groundbreaking work in the invention, development, and commercialization of Multiple-antenna Input, Multiple-antenna Output (MIMO) wireless technology. MIMO, a revolutionary technological breakthrough, has been instrumental in significantly enhancing link speed, extending the range, and fortifying the reliability of wireless networks. Its pivotal role underpins the functionality and performance of contemporary expansive 4G/5G mobile networks as well as WiFi infrastructure.

The IET Achievement Awards commend outstanding individuals from diverse corners of the world, lauding their extraordinary contributions to the progression of engineering, technology, and scientific fields across various sectors. These recognitions are extended for significant research and development within their specialized technical domains or for their leadership in pioneering enterprises. These awards serve as an integral component of the IET’s comprehensive Awards and Scholarships program, designed not only to celebrate excellence and innovation within the industry but also to foster and inspire the coming generation of engineers and technicians. Since its inception in 1922 and first presentation to Oliver Heaviside, the Faraday Medal has remained an enduring symbol of global recognition in the realms of science and technology.

A native of Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, India, Professor Paulraj commenced his illustrious career by joining the Indian Navy at the age of 16 and served for 25 years before transitioning to Stanford University. Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the award, Paulraj acknowledged, “The Faraday Medal is such an honor. I am humbled to be included in this distinguished cohort of former recipients. Though the prize is presented to an individual, it also recognizes the field of wireless communications systems and the thousands of researchers and engineers who contributed to MIMO technology for the benefit of humanity.” During his tenure in India from 1965 to 1991, Paulraj made significant strides in developing Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) sonar systems and high-performance computers and played a pivotal role in establishing three national laboratories encompassing Artificial Intelligence, Computing, and Military Electronics. Furthermore, he holds authorship and co-authorship in excess of 400 research papers and stands as a co-inventor on 80 US patents.

Dr. Gopichand Katragadda, President of the IET, emphasized the paramount importance of Engineering Excellence, stressing the significance of foundational knowledge, a systems-oriented approach, attention to detail, and a mindset focused on delivery while preparing for the future. Reflecting on the honor of presenting the Achievement Awards, Dr. Katragadda praised the recipients as innovators and pioneers, making substantial contributions that positively impact the world. He further highlighted the apprentices and technicians recognized, applauding their significant achievements and their roles as inspiring figures for the succeeding generation in the field of engineering. Dr. Katragadda stated, “We’re honored to present these talented individuals with our Achievement Awards. Our medal winners are innovators and pioneers, making a difference in the world in which we live. The apprentices and technicians recognized and awarded are fantastic, already achieving great things in their careers and inspiring others around them. They should all be proud of their achievements – they are incredible role models for the next generation”.
