Indian-American student invents a tool to detect elephant poachers in real time!

California, USA (CU)_ Anika Puri, an Indian American high-schooler, has invented an innovative tool to spot elephant poaching. Her inspiration to invent the tool dates back to her India trip four years ago, which altered her perspective on elephant poaching, prompting her to create a tool that detects elephant poachers in real time.

During her journey to India, she visited a bazaar in Mumbai, where she observed several ivory products being sold, such as jewelry and statues. Even though elephant poaching has been prohibited in India since the 1970s, there have been several reports of poaching around the country due to the market’s high demand for elephant tusks or ivory.

During a media interview, the 17-year-old youngster from Chappaqua, New York, said, “I was quite taken aback. Because I always thought, ‘well, poaching is illegal, how come it really is still such a big issue?”. The high school student of Indian descent stated that her technology is four times more successful than drones since it can find poachers by examining their activities in thermal infrared videos.
