 Indian Reserve Bank says “No!!”

-

India (Common Wealth) _ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has denied recent reports of missing banknotes manufactured by banknote printing presses, stating that sufficient accounting and protocols are in place to prevent such malpractices.  The RBI confirmed that these reports were incorrect and based on a misunderstanding of information collected under the Right to Information Act of 2005. The RBI’s officials highlighted that all banknotes issued by printing presses to the RBI are properly accounted for.

“These reports are based on an incorrect interpretation of information obtained from the printing press under the Right to Information Act of 2005,” officials stated.

To assure the reconciliation of banknotes printed at the presses and provided to the RBI, robust processes have been put in place. These systems include protocols for monitoring banknote manufacture, storage, and delivery. The RBI advises the public to rely on information published by the RBI on such topics. They reassure the public that reliable information will be delivered on a regular basis.

The RBI has already announced that the Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes would be removed from circulation while remaining legal tender. Banks have been told to stop issuing Rs 2,000 banknotes immediately. Individuals can exchange or deposit their Rs 2,000 notes at any of the RBI’s bank branches or regional branches. Non-account holders can also exchange Rs 2,000 banknotes at any bank branch up to a limit of Rs 20,000.

The RBI has set September 30 as the deadline for completing the exchange exercise, giving the people enough time to complete the necessary transactions. However, depending on the current scenario, the RBI may reconsider the September deadline. The Rs 2,000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 to satisfy the immediate monetary requirements following the demonetization of the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes. It was phased out as banknotes in other denominations became more widely accessible.

The printing of Rs 2,000 banknotes came to an end in the fiscal year 2018-19.The entire value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation had decreased drastically as of March 31, 2023, accounting for only 10.8% of total Notes in Circulation. It was also discovered that this particular denomination is rarely used in ordinary transactions.
