In 2023, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reported that more than 59,000 individuals of Indian origin were naturalized as US citizens, offering insight into the significant demographic impact of Indian immigrants on American society. This statistic positioned India as the second-largest contributor of new citizens, with Mexico leading the tally by accounting for over 110,000 new US citizens, comprising 12.7% of the total naturalizations. Additionally, the USCIS report indicated that 44,800 individuals from the Philippines and 35,200 from the Dominican Republic also acquired US citizenship during the fiscal year ending September 30.

The United States has a rich tradition of embracing immigrants from diverse backgrounds, evident in its history of welcoming over 7.7 million naturalized citizens over the past decade. These figures underscore the multicultural essence of the nation, which is enriched by the contributions of immigrants worldwide. The process of naturalization, governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), necessitates meeting specific eligibility criteria established by the USCIS, typically requiring lawful permanent residency (LPR) for at least five years.

The report elaborated on special provisions within the INA that exempt certain applicants from fulfilling all standard naturalization requirements. Notably, spouses of US citizens and individuals with military service may qualify for faster naturalization under specified circumstances. The USCIS highlighted that the majority of individuals naturalized in the past year met the criteria of being LPRs for at least five years.

Furthermore, a significant proportion of new citizens were individuals who had been LPRs for at least three years and married to US citizens for the same duration. Additionally, applicants eligible for naturalization based on military service during designated periods of hostilities were recognized for their invaluable contributions to national defense and were among those granted citizenship.
