Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ At the prestigious 78th Cannes Film Festival, a major cinematic announcement has taken center stage. Accordingly, acclaimed Indian filmmaker Om Raut has officially launched Kalam, a biographical film based on the life of Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The film will feature National Award-winning actor Dhanush in the titular role and is set to be one of the most ambitious biopics in Indian cinema. Helmed by Om Raut, known for his directorial successes Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Adipurush, Kalam aims to bring to life the remarkable journey of India’s former President and revered scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, the film promises to be a grand spectacle on both national and international stages. The announcement was made during the 2025 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, where Raut shared early insights into the film’s narrative arc and the critical choice of casting Dhanush. Hailing the film as a personal and artistic milestone, Raut said, “In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. To bring his story to the screen is not just an artistic challenge—it is a cultural responsibility.”

Titled Kalam, the film will chronicle the journey of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, from his early life in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram to becoming the 11th President of India. It will delve beyond his political life, exploring the man behind India’s missile program, his spiritual philosophy, poetic sensibilities, and unwavering commitment to education and scientific progress. Revealing the reasons behind casting actor Dhanush, Raut explained, “Portraying Dr. Kalam is about capturing not just his achievements, but his inner world—his spirituality, intellect, and moral clarity. Dhanush brings an emotional depth and versatility that makes him perfect for the role.”

Producer Abhishek Agarwal described the film as a passion project. “This is a deeply emotional moment for all of us. Collaborating with Om Raut, Dhanush, and Bhushan Kumar is a privilege. We are committed to telling Kalam ji’s story with the utmost respect and authenticity.” Bhushan Kumar of T-Series echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the film’s importance as a cultural tribute. “This is more than just a film. It’s a homage to a man whose humility and vision shaped modern India. Partnering again with Om Raut, and now with Dhanush and Abhishek Agarwal, marks a proud moment for our studio.”
Saiwyn Quadras, the writer behind successful biopics like Neerja, Maidaan, and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran, will pen the screenplay. His involvement adds further credibility to the project, which seeks to blend historical authenticity with emotional storytelling. While the rest of the cast remains undisclosed, production is currently underway. With Om Raut’s vision, Dhanush’s powerful presence, and backing from two major production houses, Kalam is expected to be a biopic of global resonance and national pride.
