UK (Commonwealth Union)_ Celebrating a remarkable milestone, identical twin sisters from Yorkshire, Anne Brown and Florence Boycott, marked their 100th birthdays together. The reunion took place at Mrs. Boycott’s care home in Barnsley, their hometown in South Yorkshire, where they were joined by friends and five generations of their family at The Firs residential home. Reflecting on their childhood, Mrs. Brown fondly recalled how even their father struggled to distinguish between them. She said, “They couldn’t tell us apart. My dad was hopeless. He could not tell us one from the other. We were very close. We were always together, never one without the other”. Despite reaching a century, Mrs. Brown expressed that it doesn’t feel any different from when she was 50.

Offering insights into their early lives, Mrs. Boycott’s daughter, Kathy Lindsay, highlighted that the twins were part of a large family of ten siblings, five boys and five girls, residing in a two-bedroom house. Recalling the challenging conditions of their upbringing, she noted, “So, it makes you wonder how they managed. And it was outside toilets and tin baths in front of the fire. They were well looked after, though.” Mrs. Lindsay humorously recounted instances of mistaking the twins for each other, emphasizing their identical appearance. She shared stories of the sisters swapping boyfriends if one wasn’t to their liking and recalled mixing them up on the phone due to their identical voices.

The twin sisters worked side by side for many years at Sugden’s shirt factory in Barnsley after completing their schooling. Mrs. Boycott pursued various jobs, including roles at a bakery, a dairy, and as a school cleaner. Remarkably, Mrs. Boycott continued to work into her mid-90s at a sewing stall in Barnsley Market, showcasing her independence. Mrs. Brown has one daughter, while Mrs. Boycott had three daughters, with one unfortunately passing away. Mrs. Boycott is now a proud grandmother of seven, a great-grandmother of six, and a great-great-grandmother of three. Expressing gratitude, Mrs. Lindsay thanked The Firs for organizing a wonderful celebration for the centenarian twins.
