Is fast fashion taking over?

-

GLOBAL (COMMONWEALTH UNION) – As they generations go on there will be trends that will be timeless and then there will be trends that will come and go in a blink of an eye. These trends are mostly a mix of styles that a celebrity made popular or something a fashion influencer found in their moms closet that kinda looked cool when they tried it on.

But of course, fashion is something that is different depending on the individual. One cannot box fashion into one particular area and state that that is what fashion is. There are different views on this ever-changing world but it’s safe to say that whatever one’s style is if there is a trend one would find a way to make it work.

Now back in the day it was the major fashion houses that set the trends. For an example if houses like Dolce Gabbana or Gucci made clothes to a new trend then that was the trend that was followed by the people. It was the fashion world that set the trend for the rest of the world to follow.

But fast fashion has changed that. It is now the people setting trends for the fashion world to follow if they want to stay relevant. The word relevance plays a huge part in fast fashion because fast fashion is just trend after trend that will either be a hit or a miss.

But there is a bigger meaning to fast fashion. Whilst the above is what the public understands as fast fashion. Fast fashion is also understood to be cheaper brands such as SHEIN, H&M, Forever21 mass producing clothes very much similar to the more exclusive and expensive brands.

This makes is more accessible for people to buy without having to break the bank as most would say. It means also that a dress by Gucci that would cost 200usd one could find something similar at H&M for maybe 40usd. This is a massive difference and most often that not people tend to spend what they can afford and a 40-dollar dress is affordable to most than a 200-dollar dress.

It must be taken into consideration that the whole world is going through a recession right now and people can’t be spending this kind of money on clothes. This has been the reason for fast fashion becoming really popular in the last 10 to 12 months.

But the question is fast fashion taking over. Well, there is two answers to this yes and no. to be fair there non right answers but of course there are yes and no arguments that’s could be made on the claim that fast fashion is taking over.

On the yes argument factor the one big thing is that its affordable. Which means that it is easier to sell to the masses and which means there is more profit being made of the garment. Mass production also makes it possible to get he garment itself made for cheap. The profit margins re higher. Then there is the mentality of “I only paid 20 bucks for this dress so even if I only get 5 or 6 wears out of it, its still worth it” this mentality has helped the fast fashion industry in more ways than one.

Further going into the yes argument is the fact that it can be available in multiple location worldwide and also via the internet and social media platforms. The sales would be all over the world which means that the brand gets more recognition. The growth of the brand will grow also because now there is accessibility.

The yes argument for fast fashion is a pretty powerful one considering that the argument is based on the fact that the entire argument is an easy enough to achieve arguments. At the end of the day a brands goal is to be able to cater to everybody and for people to see the brand as an inclusive brand where everyone from all sizes colour and genders can walk in and walk out with a cute outfit.

Now that the yes side of the argument has been looked at, we have to see why there is a side no to the argument as well. To start off with just because something is more affordable does not make it of super quality this is by no way saying that the fast fashion brands produce bad quality clothes. This just means that when the quantity is more then the fabric quality may not be as good as when one is hand making 2 to 3 pieces.

To begin with if you were to say take a dress by Vivian Westwood you are guaranteed that they dress was crafted by someone who has been in the industry for a decent period of time and not in a factory where the staff is paid per piece produced. This means that of course the cost of the Vivian Westwood dress would be a lot more than the similar dress from SHEIN but of course the Vivian Westwood dress would last a life time.

The other point is that just because it is available does not mean people will want it. There is still a large sect of people that prefer to own branded clothes that are not from brands that are known for fast fashion. They prefer to pay and buy high end designer brands. These designer brands still are very much in the market in the aspect of people wanting to purchase them.

So, all in all we can se that whilst fast fashion is becoming a large part of the fashion world, they are far from taking over the fashion world. Whilst most people have opposing views on this matter all opinions matter. but as for now it seems that this is a 50 – 50 situation. The world of fashion will always have its own changes but most things will always remain timeless and for that one must be grateful.
