On Sunday, December 29, Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a prominent figure in humanitarian efforts, departed from this life at the age of 100. His death, announced by his son, marks the end of a life defined by public service, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to bettering the world. No immediate cause of death was provided.

Born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia, James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. grew up on his family’s peanut farm, a modest upbringing that instilled in him a deep sense of community and resilience. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, Carter served as a naval officer, specializing in nuclear submarine technology. His career took a pivotal turn in 1952 when he returned to Georgia to manage the family farm after his father’s death, eventually venturing into local politics.

Elected governor of Georgia in 1970, Carter championed civil rights and government efficiency, earning him a reputation as a forward-thinking reformer. He ascended to the presidency in 1976, presenting himself as a Washington outsider during a time when the public’s trust in government was shaken by the Watergate scandal.

During his single term, Carter prioritized human rights in foreign policy and environmental stewardship and brokered the historic Camp David Accords, leading to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. However, domestic economic struggles and the protracted Iran hostage crisis overshadowed his presidency, contributing to his electoral defeat in 1980.

Despite his mixed record in office, Carter’s post-presidency redefined the role of former presidents. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center, an organization devoted to advancing human rights, resolving conflicts, and eradicating diseases. His efforts to combat Guinea worm disease, in partnership with the World Health Organization, brought cases of the debilitating illness from millions in the 1980s to just 13 in 2022. Carter’s hands-on commitment to Habitat for Humanity, where he built homes for the underprivileged well into his nineties, underscored his lifelong dedication to service.

World leaders have paid heartfelt tributes to Carter, recognizing his profound impact, with British King Charles III praising Carter as a “devoted public servant” who inspired through “dedication and humility,” recalling his 1977 visit to the United Kingdom. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also paid his respects, describing Carter’s legacy as one of “compassion, kindness, and hard work,” adding that his lifelong humanitarian efforts continue to inspire.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer lauded Carter’s “historic achievements” in brokering peace and his tireless advocacy for human rights, stating that “Jimmy Carter redefined the post-presidency with a remarkable commitment to social justice.”

Carter’s passing comes just weeks after the death of his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, in November. He celebrated his 100th birthday on October 1, surrounded by family at his Plains home, where the U.S. military honored him with a flyover.

Jimmy Carter’s life was a testament to the values of humility, perseverance, and service. As world leaders and citizens alike honor his memory, his legacy of compassion and dedication to humanity will endure as a beacon for generations to come.
