Thiruvananthapuram, India (CWBN)_ According to the news sources from CPI(M) on Friday, the twenty-one-year-old college student Arya Rajendran from Kerala has the highest possibilities of winning the Mayor post of Thiruvananthapuram. Arya Rajendran who successfully challenged the recent municipal elections will become not only the Mayor of Kerala’s capital, but also the youngest Mayor of the country if things goes as expected.

During the meeting, the Thiruvananthapuram District Secretariat of the Marxist Party proposed Arya Rajendran’s name for the Mayor post. The proposal must be approved by the state secretariat of the party which meets on Saturday.

Arya is a second year Bsc Maths student at All Saints College in Kerala. She is also an activist of the Student Federation of India (SFI) and also the state president of Balasangam, the children’s organization of the Left Party. Arya represented the Mudavanmukal ward in the Thiruvananthapuram city corporation and earned 2,872 votes, leading in 549 votes against the Congress candidate.

When asked by the media about the proposal of her name to the Mayor post, the young student-turned politician expressed confidence in her party saying that they would choose the right candidate for the Mayor post and that she was not officially informed of the news from the party. While campaigning for the state municipal elections, Arya Rajendran shared her future plans. She said, “Coming from a children’s organization, I would focus on upgrading the lower primary schools in the ward.”

Two other woman mayoral candidates in the municipal elections were OG Oleena and S Pushpalatha, who lost in Kunnkuzhi ward and Nedungad ward, respectively. Further, the present Thiruvananthapuram Mayor K Sreekumar (CPI-M) to a great shock lost this election.

Arya will be assigned to the post of mayor in accordance with the laws of reservation. In Kerala, fifty per cent of the local body seats are reserved for women and, according to the law, women lead civic bodies as an alternative. If things turns favorable, Arya Rajendran will succeed Sreekumar as the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram.
