Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy in New Delhi for reset of the bilateral partnership.
Economic, domestic, and international security will be central to the Foreign Secretary’s inaugural visit to India. Recently traveling to India, his aim is to fully realize the potential of the UK-India partnership.
During the visit, the Foreign Secretary is set to advocate for a revitalization of the UK-India relationship, including a renewed commitment to establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) advantageous to both nations’ economies.
He will express to his Indian counterpart his desire to foster greater economic growth for both countries.
“India is the emerging superpower of the 21st century, the largest country in the world with 1.4 billion people and one of the fastest growing economies in the world,” said the Foreign Secretary.
David Lammy is due to mobilize backing for swift action on the climate crisis, recognizing India as a crucial ally. This partnership aims to advance the clean energy transition and generate opportunities for both British and Indian enterprises. He will explore collaborations on India-led global initiatives focused on expanding clean energy access and enhancing climate resilience in the Global South and small island states.
The Foreign Secretary will emphasize the significance of the ‘living bridge’ between the UK and India. This term refers to the 1.7 million people of Indian descent residing in the UK, who make an outstanding contribution to British society.
The Foreign Secretary will engage in high-level discussions with Indian government officials, including Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister. He will emphasize the remarkable contributions of British Indians, highlighting how they enhance the UK’s social and economic fabric and embody the essence of modern Britain.
The contribution of British Indians to the UK has been widely recognized throughout history, with many engaged in a wide variety of diverse sectors across the UK.
The Foreign Secretary will proceed from India to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos, where he will promote UK economic partnerships and announce new collaborations on climate and health.
