Madagascar in Turmoil: President Flees After Rebel Soldiers Claim Power!

Madagascar has entered a new phase of political uncertainty after President Andry Rajoelina said he had left the country for his safety following a rebellion by an elite military unit. While he did not resign, he said in a late-night address posted on social media that he had sought safety due to what he described as an unlawful attempt to take power. The address was delayed after soldiers reportedly tried to seize the state broadcaster, leading to it being shown only on the presidency’s Facebook page.

The CAPSAT military unit broke ranks and joined crowds in Antananarivo, escalating weeks of youth-led demonstrations over water shortages and electricity cuts. The unit announced it now holds authority over the armed forces, a claim acknowledged by the defence minister in Rajoelina’s absence. Its commander said the military had responded to public pressure and would not label the events a coup, insisting that the next steps should be decided by citizens and not just political leaders.

The protests, which were initially driven by Gen Zs, developed to include trade unions and civic groups that raised concerns about the cost of living, access to education, and allegations of corruption involving government-linked individuals. Major cities implemented curfews as the crowds grew. Authorities disputed the United Nations‘ report of at least 22 deaths.

Madagascar has experienced constant political crises since its independence in 1960, with several of its leaders being removed through military intervention. Rajoelina himself rose to power during the 2009 power shift, backed by the same unit that now challenges his authority. His current mandate has faced criticisms after opposition parties boycotted the 2023 election.

Reports circulated that he may have left aboard a French military aircraft, although French officials have declined to comment. Rajoelina said he wanted dialogue and respect for the constitution, without confirming whether he intended to return. Mauritius confirmed that a plane carrying figures close to the presidency landed there, noting that it was not satisfied with the circumstances of their arrival.

Foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy in Madagascar, have urged citizens to remain cautious due to what they describe as a highly unpredictable situation. The African Union also called for restraint from both the military and civilians.
