Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – An eighth individual involved in a London-based drug trafficking ring has been imprisoned following an investigation by Metropolitan Police detectives, as the force intensifies efforts to tackle issues significantly impacting London communities.

Aaron Wise, 33, a drug gang leader from Hackney, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on August 2, 2024, at Isleworth Crown Court for conspiring to supply cocaine.

Wise is the latest member of the drug network to be sentenced after officers spent over a year collecting evidence to ensure those involved faced justice. This well-organized group distributed cocaine throughout west and east London, exacerbating drug addiction problems.

The operation began after law enforcement agencies, with assistance from the National Crime Agency (NCA), infiltrated the encrypted communications platform EncroChat. Metropolitan Police detectives then conducted a covert investigation into drug distributors across London.

Officers analyzed over four years of phone data to uncover the full extent of the network’s reach. The court heard that the gang supplied more than 100kg of cocaine to London residents between 2019 and 2020, with an estimated street value of £8 million.

Wise orchestrated the operation, overseeing the division of the network into drug couriers and cash couriers, which made the group more elusive and challenging for law enforcement to trace.

For weeks, Met detectives conducted surveillance on gang members across London, meticulously gathering evidence and mapping out their illegal activities to build a solid case against them.

As the police began apprehending network members, Wise escaped abroad. The Met collaborated with Spanish police amid manhunt, and eventually located him in Marbella.

“We know the impact drugs have on our communities. They lead to addiction, anti-social behaviour and violence, destroying people’s lives and ripping families apart. That’s why we’re pursuing those who seek to profit from the illegal drugs trade and fuel these destructive addictions,” added Detective Constable Gary Jopling, who led the investigation.

The gang war across the UK centered around drug network has been a menace to society for years, however dismantling sophisticated networks drug networks has always been a challenge with a need for greater intelligence across the globe.
