Maldives and Seychelles aim to improve bilateral ties!

Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ The Presidents of the Republic of Seychelles Mr Wavel Ramkalawan and the Republic of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih recently met on the sidelines of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries held in Doha, Qatar. Being neighboring island states, both countries share a common ocean and a common Small Island Developing State (SIDS) agenda. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed various issues, including climate change, tourism, and opportunities for cooperation.

The two presidents agreed that it is essential for the Seychelles and Maldives to engage in frequent dialogues to explore new avenues for cooperation. Accordingly, they discussed efforts to restore tourism to pre-pandemic levels, which is vital to their economies. In addition, as members of the Alliance of Small Island States, the leaders expressed their shared interest in playing a major role in the Small Island Developing States. They also agreed to collaborate in the international arena on issues of mutual interest, such as climate change.

Further, both presidents expressed hope for further improving the Seychelles-Maldives ties and identifying opportunities for international collaboration. Since the Seychelles and Maldives established diplomatic ties in 1980, they have maintained a strong and enduring friendship. As small island nations experiencing similar difficulties and opportunities, the two presidents centered their discussions on the challenges and prospects encountered by Small Island Nations and how the two countries may further strengthen their cooperation.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that Ambassador Claude Morel recently presented his credentials to President Solih as the non-resident High Commissioner of the Seychelles to the Maldives. This development signifies a step towards a stronger relationship between the two island states. Overall, the meeting between the Presidents of the Seychelles and Maldives was productive and promising. The leaders’ shared vision for cooperation and determination to address common challenges will strengthen the relationship between the two countries, particularly in their efforts to promote the interests of Small Island Developing States.
