Maldives looking forward to strengthening trade relations with Mauritius

Male, Maldives (CU)_ The President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravin Kumar Jugnauth, discussed measures to improve commercial cooperation between the two countries. The president of the Maldives had a meeting with the prime minister of Mauritius at the Kigali Marriott Hotel in Rwanda during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022.

President Solih and the Prime Minister of Mauritius addressed bilateral ties and areas of mutual interest in international collaboration. Tourism-related commonalities between the Maldives and Mauritius were also discussed at the conference. The Maldivian president claimed that both Mauritius and Maldives rely on the Indian Ocean for business, trade, and livelihoods. He also noted that both nations are members of significant organizations, such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Alliance for Small Island States (AOSIS).

Moreover, he highlighted that Maldives and Mauritius have the chance to learn from one another in the tourist business, especially in reviving the tourism industry’s role in resuming the economic decline induced by the Covid-19 pandemic. The president also expressed confidence that future economic and commercial connections between the two nations will be strengthened. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed attended the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 held in Rwanda. They were joined by a high-level team of government leaders.

During their journey, President Solih held bilateral discussions with other global leaders to bolster the Maldives’ position in the international community, enhance its common interests, and contribute to the resolution of global concerns. CHOGM 2022 is the first summit for the Maldives since the island nation’s reentry into the Commonwealth of Nations on February 1, 2020.
