Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_ The Maldives has welcomed an impressive 90,000 tourists in the first two weeks of 2025, marking a significant increase in arrivals compared to the same period last year. According to statistics shared by the Ministry of Tourism, this represents an 8 percent rise from the 83,000 tourists recorded in the first two weeks of January 2024. Of the 90,000 tourists who have arrived in the Maldives so far this year, 70 percent, or approximately 63,400 visitors, are staying at the country’s renowned resorts. The remaining 25,000, or 28 percent, are accommodated in hotels and guesthouses, while the remaining 2,200 tourists are aboard safaris and liveaboards, further emphasizing the Maldives’ diverse accommodation offerings.

While resorts dominate the country’s tourist infrastructure, accounting for 69 percent of the total bed capacity, the overall tourism landscape is well-rounded. With 42,000 beds located in resorts out of a total of 61,000 tourism service beds, resorts continue to play a critical role in the tourism sector. Guesthouses, on the other hand, offer 13,000 beds, representing 22 percent of the total capacity, reflecting the growing interest in more affordable and intimate accommodations. The December to January period is traditionally the peak season for arrivals in the Maldives, with tourists from Europe representing the majority of visitors. This year, Russia leads as the top source market, followed by Italy and the United Kingdom. While China had previously been the leading market, it now ranks fourth in terms of arrivals to the Maldives.

Furthermore, the government of the Maldives has set an ambitious target of welcoming 2.2 million tourists by the end of 2025, and this strong start to the year positions the destination on track to achieve this goal. Accordingly, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), also known as Visit Maldives, the country has set its sights even higher, aiming for US$5 billion in tourism receipts for the year. This goal builds on the successful achievements of 2024, when the Maldives welcomed a record-breaking 2 million tourists. The country saw impressive growth in tourist arrivals, especially during February, which set new daily and monthly records. A key factor in this success was the Maldives’ extensive marketing efforts, including participation in 23 fairs and roadshows, 15 social media campaigns, and 23 virtual events.
