Texas, USA (CU)_ Dr. Abraham, MD, MPH, FACP, ACP, was recently elected as the President of the 106-year-old American College of Physicians (ACP), which represents internal medicine physicians (internists), associated subspecialists, and medical students, for the years 2021-2022. He is the country’s first Indian-American physician to manage one of the most prominent medical institutions in the nation.
Dr. George Abraham is a resident of Shrewsbury, MA. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Chief of Medicine and Emeritus President of the Medical Staff at Saint Vincent Hospital, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services.
The American College of Physicians (ACP) is the biggest medical specialty association in the United States, representing members in over 145 nations across the globe. There are 161,000 internal medicine physicians and medical students who are members of the ACP. Internal medicine physicians are experts who use scientific knowledge and clinical skills to diagnose, treat, and compassionately care for individuals with illnesses ranging from minor to severe.
Dr. Abraham has represented ACP in a variety of roles, including as Governor of the Massachusetts Chapter on the Board of Governors, followed by election as Chair of the Board of Governors. Apart from representing members at the national level, the Board of Governors serves as an advisory board to the Board of Regents and executes national initiatives. He remained on the Board of Regents, where he served as President-elect for a year before becoming President.
Dr. Abraham has the honorary title of Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), which recognizes continuous individual service and achievements to the practice of medicine. He graduated from Christian Medical College in India with a medical degree and a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Internal medicine and infectious illness are two of his professional interests and competence. He is the Immediate-Past Chair of the Infectious Disease Subspecialty Board, American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Chair of the Board of Registration in Medicine, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
